Background Information: Workshop for Educators on Collaborative Learning Communities

Many teachers are unsure of how to go about setting up collaborative groups or find collaborative groups messy, disorganized, and an ill-structured waste of instructional time. Dispelling myths and addressing concerns removes some obstacles preventing collaborative groups.

Students who collaborate also are more engaged in learning. Collaboration is a 21st century skill for students and this must be modeled by educators. Educators must also provide opportunities for students to collaborate in multiple settings and activities. STEM certified schools requires students to work independently and collaboratively in an inquiry-based learning environment that encourages finding creative solutions to authentic and complex problems and use technology resources to conduct research, demonstrate creative and critical thinking, and communicate and work collaboratively.
